As the largest town in the region of Barkly in Northern Territory, Australia, Tennant Creek is a hub for seasonal fun and exciting events. With a diverse cultural scene and a distinct outback charm, there is no shortage of activities that will keep locals and visitors alike entertained throughout the year. Here are just a few of the highlights you can look forward to in this vibrant region.

April - May: The Camel Cup

The Camel Cup is an annual event that celebrates the local camel racing culture in Alice Springs. However, it is well worth the trek for Barkly residents, especially those keen to experience some unique entertainment. The Camel Cup features a range of races, including the popular Humpy Cup, in which camels carry jockeys riding on top of a specially designed hump. You can also enjoy live entertainment, food and drink stalls and kids’ activities.

June: Desert Harmony Festival

The Desert Harmony Festival is a celebration of Indigenous culture, music, and art. Held in Tennant Creek, the festival is a melding of traditional and contemporary performances, with events including live music, art exhibitions, workshops, and community activities. The festival celebrates Australia's diverse cultural heritage and is a great opportunity to learn about the local Indigenous culture and language.

July: Brunette Races

The Brunette Races takes place annually and is one of the most anticipated events in the Barkly region. The day-long event includes a range of races, such as horse races, foot races, and novelty races, as well as live music, food and drinks, and activities for all ages. This event is an excellent opportunity to experience the outback and socialize with locals.

August: Tennant Creek Show

The Tennant Creek Show is an annual event that showcases the agricultural, pastoral and mining industries within the region. This event is held over two days at the Tennant Creek showground and includes activities such as cattle dog trials, stud stock, horse shows, sideshows and more. There is also an agricultural display and exhibitions.

September: Barkly Races

The Barkly Races is another one of the annual events that brings the region to life. Over a weekend, visitors can enjoy a range of races, live music, food and drinks, and activities for the whole family. The event is held at the Tennant Creek Racecourse and attracts many visitors from all over.

November: Tennant Creek Goldrush Festival

The Tennant Creek Goldrush Festival is a celebration of the town's history and its gold mining heritage. The festival, which takes place over a weekend, offers a range of activities such as mine tours, gold panning, live entertainment, food stalls, and a street parade. Visitors can also attend a re-enactment of the 1904 gold rush, which is an entertaining and educational experience.

December - January: Christmas Carnivals

The Christmas Carnivals are a time of festive cheer across the region, with each town hosting its own event. The festivities include live music, food, market stalls and carnival rides, and much more. It’s a great time to celebrate the festive season with family and friends.

In addition to these events, the region also has ample opportunities to explore the picturesque landscape and unique wildlife. The nearby Devil’s Marbles and Davenport Ranges are popular outdoor playgrounds, while the Barkly Tableland offers exciting opportunities for camping, hiking, and four-wheel driving.
